Adventures in Reading - There's something about Mary...

Apr. 18th, 2011 11:34 am Adventures in Reading

Having a wonderful mini-break in Reading.

Came down with Tim ( timpootle  ) on Friday and he dropped me off with Adrian ( the_hatstand ) who took me to a very nice pub for lunch called "The cunning Man" -  I don't know if the pub name refers to any particular cunning man - I feel some googling coming on...

Friday evening was spent curled up with Adrian on his sofa while he introduced me to a very surreal series called "Green Wing" - it is... weird, but strangely addictive.

Saturday I had to disappear off for a BVS committee meeting, my second in the role of Chair - I was really pleased to get the meeting done and dusted in 2 hours - the shortest I have known for this committee - the previous Chair held the record of 5.5 hours for one committee meeting, and the average when I was secretary seemed to be about 4 hours.  I am on a mission, since bevoming Chair, to reduce the waffle, and it seems to be working!  Really productive meeting.

Saturday night Tim and I met up with our good friend Rob Sharpe for a very pleasant dinner before Tim left me at the Rose and Crown pub in Sandurst to see Adrian drumming with the Syn City Rockers, a rather excellent AC-DC and Thin Lizzy tribute band.  I haven't had much exposure to hard rock and I very much enjoyed it - I would highly recommend going to see them if you find yourself in the Reading area when they are gigging.

A late night - Adrian and I didn't get to bed until close to 2am I think!  So our start to Sunday was a slow one, and breakfast was lunch at another pub, this time "The Black Boy", also very nice.  As often happens when I am down, I had asked Adrian if we could drop in on his parents while I was visiting, so after lunch we headed over to see them.  John and Monica are such lovely people - it is always a pleasure to see them.  The visit had the added bonus of some low-flying kites (the birds) diving into a neighbour's garden while we watched; and seeing some photos of Adrian's graduation - much to Adrian's embarrassment I have put in a request to see embarrasing baby photos on my next visit.

Adrian has been the perfect host as usual - flowers in the bedroom and breakfast in bed :-)

Another lazy start to the day today, but now we are off to see Cliveden, a local National Trust place, followed by lunch, and maybe if I am lucky a trip to the local drum shop afterwards to look at all the pretty drum kits.

Back home tomorrow to teach in the afternoon.  After a wonderful few days I shall be sorry to leave.

I will have to do another post on my return about all the other stuff I have been up to lately, including a trip to Selby with johnhulls  and good times with doctorstewie  and timpootle .  More later....  for now I have a handsome drummer about to drive me off into the sunshine...
